The Children’s Legacy Fund was established in 1984 as a result of the dissemination of the Children’s Aid Society. Parents with children in care had their child tax benefit held in trust and when Children’s Aid Society dissolved, the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre was one of several organizations who received a one-time payment. The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre invested their portion $166,000 and the Children’s Legacy Fund was started to donate the interest to Indigenous families each year. The Children’s Legacy Fund Board of Directors is appointed by Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Board of Directors and assumes responsibility for overseeing the investment and distribution of funds.
All persons caring for Indigenous children may submit requests for financial assistance for:
1. Repatriation: one application per family
2. Sports, arts, recreation: one application per family per year up to $500.00
3. Scholarships: separate application process for $1,000 scholarship to post-secondary institution
