Position: Harm Reduction Planner
Classification: Permanent Full Time 40 hours per week

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Harm Reduction Planner – works as part of the team to provide engagement and support services, to residents as we staff around substance use, sexual health, and self-harm, and a wide range of harm reduction aspects, using an Indigenous harm reduction model. The emphasis is on meeting the resident “where they are at” and providing non-judgemental, no-coercive services and resources to residents. In addition, the Harm Reduction Planner provides consultation, training, and support to program staff in their work with residents engaging in behaviours perceived to be risky. The intention of the Harm Reduction Planner will be the leader in forwarding our program commitment to providing services using a trauma informed, harm reduction model. The incumbent will act in accordance with the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Code of Honour. They will encourage the residents to draw on their strengths and capabilities and view themselves as a critical part of the Astum Api Niikinaahk community. The incumbent for this position will alternate being on-call with the Astum Api Coordinator, as well take on the responsibility of being the Acting Coordinator in the absence of the Astum Api Coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge of the practices of the Centre and must understand the Centre’s philosophy and values.
- Working knowledge & experience in mental health, homelessness, housing & harm reduction models.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships, care planning and healing plan development and implementing this with the participants.
- Working knowledge of crisis intervention strategies.
- Assists residents with developing life and problem-solving skills, providing support via facilitation and arranging skill enhancement workshops.
- Provides direction to employees regarding crisis management practices including preparation, prevention, de-escalation, risk management, problem solving, medical interventions and debriefing.
- Liaises and consults with collateral agencies with regards to a specific service recipient or service concerns in general
- Needs to have the ability to work cooperatively with others and contribute as a team member.
- Ability to work under stressful situations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of Indigenous values.
- Must provide valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence, access to a vehicle would be an asset.
- Provide current (within the last three months) police/Child Abuse Registry checks.
